Methodist church faces LGBTQ policy decisions

There are two big choices facing a church that 400,000 of you call your spiritual home the United Methodist Church is about to decide whether to allow openly gay people to be ordained as members of the clergy and whether the church will perform same-sex weddings John Henry’s on that for us United Methodist Church is the third largest church in America between Baltimore Washington and Virginia they’re roughly four hundred and seventy thousand people who practice that faith in our region right now many of them are keeping their eyes on st. Louis that’s where a pivotal vote will soon take place church leaders will decide between several proposals that will shape how the Methodist Church approaches LGBTQ issues one proposal wants to keep things as they are gay people could not be ordained and the clergy would not be allowed to perform same-sex marriages another idea would remove all of those bands now DC resident and married lesbian TC Mauro is in st.

Louis with members of foundry UMC she would like to see the church be more friendly to the LGBTQ community she said it was just three years ago when she did not get the number of votes needed to become ordained in the church it is frustrating in order to know that so many other people have left the United Methodist Church to put their good talents to use in other denominations and and I hope that regardless of what happens that harm to gay and lesbian people is reduced as much as possible not everyone wants change a prominent Methodist from Memphis recently wrote on his Facebook page that things should stay the way they are that division concerns some that this can all altima tear the United Methodist Church apart or divide it into progressive and traditional wings we’ll just have to see how its leaders vote Leslie .

PATIENT. AND THE HEALTH CARE PROVIDER. >> ONE ISSUE, SAME-SEX MARRIAGE — YOU HAVE EQUAL PROTECTION, IT’S WORKING ITS WAY THROUGH THE COURTS, THE DECISIONS ARE GETTING MORE AND MORE UNIFORM. BUT THEN YOU HAVE PEOPLE OF FAITH WHO SAY MARRIAGE IS OURS, GOD SAYS IT IS A MAN AND A WOMAN. THE BIBLE SAYS MY FAITH SAYS — WHICH ONE WINS WITH DR. CARSON? >> HERE’S WHAT I WOULD DO, I WOULD DO WHAT THE CONSTITUTION SAYS. THE CONSTITUTION SAYS CIVIL ISSUES OF THAT NATURE SHOULD BE DETERMINED AT THE STATE LEVEL. WHY DOES IT SAY THAT? BECAUSE THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM AT THE STATE LEVEL HAS TO ANSWER TO THE PEOPLE. >> WHAT IF PEOPLE OF THE STATE VOTE FOR A LAW 100-0 THAT WINDS UP INFRINGING ON THE RIGHTS OF A MINORITY LIKE HAPPENED VERY OFTEN WITH SLAVERY? LIKE MANY WOULD ARGUE IS HAPPENING NOW WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE GAY? >> AND OUR CONSTITUTION WAS FOLLOWED AND WE CORRECTED THOSE THINGS. >> AND ISN’T THAT WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW WITH SAME-SEX MARRIAGE? IT’S BEING CORRECTED AS A FORM OF VIOLATION OF EQUAL PROTECTION.

>> NO. DID SOMETHING HAPPEN WHILE THEY WERE IN THERE? >> YOU KNOW THERE’S A WHOLE THEORY OF DOMINANCE. >> I SAID A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO GO IN COME OUT — ARE YOU DENYING THAT’S TRUE? >> I’M NOT DENYING THAT’S TRUE, BUT I’M DENYING THAT’S A BASIS OF UNDERSTANDING HOMOSEXUALITY. >> IF THAT’S THE CASE, IT OBVIOUSLY THWARTS WHAT YOU JUST SAID. >> A LOT OF PEOPLE GO INTO JAIL A DRUG ADDICT AND COME OUT A CRIMINAL. >> WHY DO GAY PEOPLE WANT TO GET MARRIED? THEY WANT TO HAVE VARIOUS RIGHTS, PROPERTY RIGHTS, VISITATION RIGHTS. >> THEY WANT THEIR COMMITMENT TO COUNT JUST LIKE MINE AND MY WIVES? >> WHY CAN’T ANY TWO HUMAN BEINGS — WHY CAN’T THEY HAVE THE LEGAL RIGHT TO DO THOSE THINGS.

School strike for climate – save the world by changing the rules | Greta Thunberg | TEDxStockholm

Translator: Akinori Oyama Reviewer: Peter van de Ven When I was about eight years old, I first heard about something called climate change or global warming. Apparently, that was something humans have created by our way of living. I was told to turn off the lights to save energy and to recycle paper to save resources. I remember thinking that it was very strange that humans, who are an animal species among others, could be capable of changing the Earth’s climate. Because if we were, and if it was really happening, we wouldn’t be talking about anything else. As soon as you’d turn on the TV, everything would be about that. Headlines, radio, newspapers, you would never read or hear about anything else, as if there was a world war going on.

But no one ever talked about it. If burning fossil fuels was so bad that it threatened our very existence, how could we just continue like before? Why were there no restrictions? Why wasn’t it made illegal? To me, that did not add up. It was too unreal. So when I was 11, I became ill. I fell into depression, I stopped talking, and I stopped eating. In two months, I lost about 10 kilos of weight. Later on, I was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, OCD and selective mutism. That basically means I only speak when I think it’s necessary – now is one of those moments. (Applause) For those of us who are on the spectrum, almost everything is black or white. We aren’t very good at lying, and we usually don’t enjoy participating in this social game that the rest of you seem so fond of. (Laughter) I think in many ways that we autistic are the normal ones, and the rest of the people are pretty strange, (Laughter) especially when it comes to the sustainability crisis, where everyone keeps saying climate change is an existential threat and the most important issue of all, and yet they just carry on like before.

I don’t understand that, because if the emissions have to stop, then we must stop the emissions. To me that is black or white. There are no gray areas when it comes to survival. Either we go on as a civilization or we don’t. We have to change. Rich countries like Sweden need to start reducing emissions by at least 15 percent every year. And that is so that we can stay below a two-degree warming target. Yet, as the IPCC have recently demonstrated, aiming instead for 1.5 degrees Celsius would significantly reduce the climate impacts. But we can only imagine what that means for reducing emissions.

You would think the media and every one of our leaders would be talking about nothing else, but they never even mention it. Nor does anyone ever mention the greenhouse gases already locked in the system. Nor that air pollution is hiding a warming so that when we stop burning fossil fuels, we already have an extra level of warming perhaps as high as 0.5 to 1.1 degrees Celsius. Furthermore does hardly anyone speak about the fact that we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction, with up to 200 species going extinct every single day, that the extinction rate today is between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than what is seen as normal. Nor does hardly anyone ever speak about the aspect of equity or climate justice, clearly stated everywhere in the Paris Agreement, which is absolutely necessary to make it work on a global scale. That means that rich countries need to get down to zero emissions within 6 to 12 years, with today’s emission speed.

And that is so that people in poorer countries can have a chance to heighten their standard of living by building some of the infrastructure that we have already built, such as roads, schools, hospitals, clean drinking water, electricity, and so on. Because how can we expect countries like India or Nigeria to care about the climate crisis if we who already have everything don’t care even a second about it or our actual commitments to the Paris Agreement? So, why are we not reducing our emissions? Why are they in fact still increasing? Are we knowingly causing a mass extinction? Are we evil? No, of course not. People keep doing what they do because the vast majority doesn’t have a clue about the actual consequences of our everyday life, and they don’t know that rapid change is required. We all think we know, and we all think everybody knows, but we don’t. Because how could we? If there really was a crisis, and if this crisis was caused by our emissions, you would at least see some signs. Not just flooded cities, tens of thousands of dead people, and whole nations leveled to piles of torn down buildings.

You would see some restrictions. But no. And no one talks about it. There are no emergency meetings, no headlines, no breaking news. No one is acting as if we were in a crisis. Even most climate scientists or green politicians keep on flying around the world, eating meat and dairy. If I live to be 100, I will be alive in the year 2103. When you think about the future today, you don’t think beyond the year 2050. By then, I will, in the best case, not even have lived half of my life. What happens next? The year 2078, I will celebrate my 75th birthday. If I have children or grandchildren, maybe they will spend that day with me. Maybe they will ask me about you, the people who were around, back in 2018. Maybe they will ask why you didn’t do anything while there still was time to act. What we do or don’t do right now will affect my entire life and the lives of my children and grandchildren. What we do or don’t do right now, me and my generation can’t undo in the future.

So when school started in August of this year, I decided that this was enough. I set myself down on the ground outside the Swedish parliament. I school striked for the climate. Some people say that I should be in school instead. Some people say that I should study to become a climate scientist so that I can “solve the climate crisis.” But the climate crisis has already been solved. We already have all the facts and solutions. All we have to do is to wake up and change. And why should I be studying for a future that soon will be no more when no one is doing anything whatsoever to save that future? And what is the point of learning facts in the school system when the most important facts given by the finest science of that same school system clearly means nothing to our politicians and our society.

Some people say that Sweden is just a small country, and that it doesn’t matter what we do, but I think that if a few children can get headlines all over the world just by not coming to school for a few weeks, imagine what we could all do together if you wanted to. (Applause) Now we’re almost at the end of my talk, and this is where people usually start talking about hope, solar panels, wind power, circular economy, and so on, but I’m not going to do that. We’ve had 30 years of pep-talking and selling positive ideas. And I’m sorry, but it doesn’t work. Because if it would have, the emissions would have gone down by now. They haven’t. And yes, we do need hope, of course we do.

But the one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act, hope is everywhere. So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come. Today, we use 100 million barrels of oil every single day. There are no politics to change that. There are no rules to keep that oil in the ground. So we can’t save the world by playing by the rules, because the rules have to be changed. Everything needs to change, and it has to start today. Thank you. (Applause) .

Bruce Jenner & the Transgender Question

Hi, my name is Father Mike Schmitz and this is Ascension Presents. So, I was, over Memorial Day weekend hanging out with my family, and one of my nephews, he, he pretended he was a dog. And you know how you have to deal with a little kid when like, “I’m a puppy!” Okay. you have the ball and you throw the ball and they come back with it and you’re playing around at one point it was time for supper and so I’m like, “ok buddy, time to get up, wash your hands get ready for supper.

He is like, “No, no, no” “I’m a puppy” I’m the fun uncle that’s what priests are- the fun uncle so I’m like, I’m not gonna correct this kid I just kinda directed him to his parents and his parents are like “Listen, You are a little boy. You are not a dog. Wash your hands. Sit at the table.” and I thought, “Alright. That’s good that’s good parenting right there.” where, you know here is the kid, he maybe really thinks he is a dog but the reality is you’re not a dog.” I was thinking about this and thinking about that love that my nephew’s parents have for him when it comes to this big thing on the news, of course, which is Bruce Jenner or anyone else who experiences the sense of being transgender the idea is that this I have a Bruce Jenner’s case I have a man’s body but, I’m not really a man I have always felt like a woman.

You know, people say “Are you very judgmental?” Here’s what I’m saying: That I have no judgment on this thing … I just have an assessment. I’m not saying that Bruce Jenner is evil … I just think that that perception of him saying, “I’m actually a woman.” I just think that assessment or that perception is off. I think it is inaccurate. Here’s what I mean. Let’s just even ask the question those of you who are men who are watching this, those of you who are woman who are watching this, women, what does it feel like to be a woman? Guys, what does it feel like to be a man? Flip it around, say men, do you have any idea what it feels like to be a woman? And women, do you have any idea what it feels like to be a man? No. The reality is of course, we don’t we have no idea what it feels like to be a member of the opposite sex. All we have— all we have—this is crazy all we have is gender stereotypes.

Here’s what I mean: There are stories about, you know here is the only young boy and his parents say, “well, you know, we are treating him like a girl he really is a girl, because he identifies as a girl. Why? Well, you know ever since he was little we didn’t have to tell him. He liked dolls more than he likes trucks, he liked um uh dresses more than he liked jeans, he liked pink more than he liked blue. And you think of that wait a second that’s how you know that your little boy is actually a girl because he just happens to like things that are traditionally associated with girls? it’s just something that’s arbitrary. Skirts that … women wear skirts is arbitrary, that women play with dolls or over trucks is arbitrary. In fact, I think about this: one of my older sisters growing up, she was what you call back in the day, since I’m an old man, what they call back in the day they called her a tomboy Why? because she loved hunting… she loved fishing she loved she was incredible at sports the field she’s in medicine right now she is a doctor her field that she is in right now is a field traditionally associated dominated by men her husband is a stay-at-home dad.

Now she is hard charging, she does a lot she takes … she is really smart, she takes a bull by the horns all these kinds of things things that are “masculine” traits now wait- is she a man? no why? because she is a woman she is the mom of her kids my brother-in-law he is patient he is kind he is gentle with his kids he is a stay-at-home dad traditionally, things associated with women how do we know he is not a woman? because he looks at his body. His body reveals that he is actually actually a man. Here’s the crazy thing is if my perception doesn’t match up to reality it’s not reality that has to change it’s my perception of reality that has to change we all know this when it comes to I’m sure some of you have this experience of people in your life who suffer from something like another kind of body dysmorphia something like anorexia.

There is a young woman that I remember working with, years ago. It’s painful. She was in the hospital because she was so thin. She was 98 pounds, but she still perceived herself as being fat, saying, “No, I still feel fat. I still feel fat.” Like, wait a second … but your perception and reality is off. So it’s not reality that has to change it’s your perception of reality that has to change. That’s an act of love. In fact, there is this other version of body dysmorphia, this kind of misperception of one’s body, it’s called BIID. It stands for body integrity identity disorder; and what BIID is it’s when someone looks at something like their hand and says this isn’t my hand this is, it feels foreign to me, or these legs feel foreign to me.

In fact, there was a documentary I watched a number of years ago about a woman who she perceived herself to be a paraplegic; she perceived herself that her legs didn’t work, and so that’s how she lived her life. She got around in a wheelchair, she transferred herself from her bed to a wheelchair with like a pulley system kind of a thing; but the reality is her legs do work. Her perception was off. And so what happens is this when someone is suffering from this kind of body dysmorphia, BIID, comes in and says, “Doctor, this is not my hand, not my real hand.

Can you amputate it?” Doctors around the world are instructed … no. That’s actually their hands. Don’t amputate a healthy limb. Their perception is wrong, not the reality. But when it comes to sex we all lose our brains and we all lose our minds and a man goes in or a woman goes in and says, “Doctor, these external genitalia are not mine. They’re not actually a part of me. I perceive that they shouldn’t be here.” and apparently we are ok with doctors saying, “OK, well then we will have sex reassignment surgery” or gender reassignment surgery.

And yet that seems to be kind of covering over the real problem … just like amputating a healthy limb would be covering over the real problem. In fact that’s the conclusion that a guy named Doctor Paul McCue came to. He was the chief psychiatrist of John’s Hopkins Hospital … so this isn’t like a crack pot doctor. This is the chief psychiatrist ex-chief psychiatrist of John’s Hopkins.

He dealt with a lot of these cases of people identified as transgender. They saw themselves as a member of the opposite sex and with sex reassignment surgery he said, yeah, some of these patients experience satisfaction of that reassignment, but they were still disturbed; they were still hurting. And he came to this conclusion, he said we had to stop doing sex reassignment surgery, because he says, we found that um he found that producing satisfied but a still troubled patient seemed an inadequate reason for surgically amputating normal organs; because I could change these external factors but the reality is at the heart of everything I am still a man or I am still a woman. And when it comes down to it that’s the message of love. This is not a message of judging, this is not a message of criticizing, this is not even a message of trying to blame anyone or make anyone into a monster. No, absolutely not! These are people who are hurting. Anyone, the people in my life who have been hurting from anorexia or any other kind of body dysmorphia, or even this kind of sense of identifying with members of the opposite gender all of that comes down to someone who is hurting.

So what are we called to do as Catholics…. Well we don’t have to judge because no one is calling us to judge and no one wants us to judge. We don’t need to judge. What we’re called to do is called to walk with people. That’s one of the best things we do as Catholics is we walk with people. We listen to them, we hear what they are really saying and then we are able to just not have to yell at anyone and not have to criticize anyone, but just be able to say, “Let me walk with you.” I don’t have to give you what you want in order to love you, but I am called to walk with you in order to love you.

That’s why it is easy for me to say this on a video, to say that, yeah, we’re you ever called to do this, but what really happens is this: When Catholics when those that belong to Jesus are willing to get in the messiness of someone’s, you know, someone’s brokenness, someone’s wound, it doesn’t matter what it is, listen to them, to love them and walk with them, that’s what we are really called to do. And when it comes to Bruce Jenner or when it comes to anyone else, it comes to any of the people in your life and in my life, the best thing we can do is not simply share the truth with them, but it’s also to walk with them. So who is God calling you to walk with, today? It doesn’t have to be with regard to this kind of stuff.

It can be with regard to anything. Who is the broken person in your life? Broken doesn’t mean wrecked, doesn’t mean ruined, doesn’t mean bad. It just means wounded. Who is the wounded person in your life that God’s calling you to listen to, to love, and to walk with today? From all of us here at Ascension Presents, my name is Father Mike. God bless. .

Were they horse lesbians? – No, this was actually a blind date that I had high hopes for. You know, got my puss waxed for it. But I get there, and she’s practically my twin. Like, I’m narcissistic, but I’m not gonna have sex with myself. – It could be fun though.

You guys could like, trade lives like in The Parent Trap. – That was a good movie. – Yeah, but what about your second date? What was wrong with her? Was she a CrossFit lesbian? Like show up with a tractor tire and a kettle bell? – No, second one was actually going really well until her ex-girlfriend showed up out of nowhere and declared her undying love for her and that she built her house with her bare fucking hands. – Aww, that’s so romantic. – U-Haul! Typical. – What about the third date? Lucky number three? – No, that was the worst of all. – But it looks like it’s going so well. – No, look closer. We have the same name. Hi, my name is Brittany, and this is my girlfriend, Brittany? That’s disgusting. What would that wedding invite look like? – I mean, have you tried online dating? – Yeah. I’ve swiped ’til the end of Tinder.

Do you know what that feels like? – No! – We met in person. – Like, years ago. – Yeah, before Tinder. – I’m sure there are plenty of single lesbians left for you in this town. – Yeah, we have a lot of single lesbian friends. – Like Jacqueline! Ok, I met her and a feminist friend. She’s very empowered. She talks about vulvas and how they mean something more than what we think they mean. – No, she hooked with my ex like two years ago at Dina. – Hold on to your taco shell because here comes Cynthia! – Oh, she’s great. – Yeah, I know she’s great. I dated her. – We have a bunch of straight girls who I feel like if you got them a glass of wine things would get a little crazy, right? Like Marsha? – No, I’m done with the whole straight girl thing.

I can’t do that anymore. They think my clit is a pencil eraser. – No, I know that my sister would sleep with you. – She said I was pretty for a lesbian once. I just wanna find a nice, available, single woman who knows she’s into other women that’s done experimenting, isn’t going to move into my apartment after two weeks, hasn’t, you know, slept with people I’ve slept with. Is it really that difficult? Thank you. – What are you reading? – I know, I’m a stereotype. – Ooh, yikes, me too. – Oh, incredible. – But at least you’re – not alone. – ‘Sup? You Brittany? I’m Jean. .

We Need To Talk About Asian Mental Illness (BetterHelp)

Heard a lot of people say “He’s 22.” but b*tch I’m 24 and I knew better at, like, 15 so stop making excuses for people who do shitty things and make millions of dollars for it. Hey friends. Long time no see. Today’s video is sponsored by BetterHelp so definitely stick around till the end of the video because it’s a really cool service and happens to be relevant to what we’re talking about today. Go figure. It’s almost like I planned it. We’re gonna be talking about mental health today and funnily enough the reason I was gone for so long is because I was taking a little mental health break so I’m just, like, super on-brand.

So by now, because I’m super late to talk about this, you probably know about a certain YouTube star who posted some pretty f*cked up shit on his channel. I don’t wanna give this Youtuber any more recognition because unfortunately he’s already gained a ton of subscribers from this. This is actually one of his best months ever which is, uh, upsetting. So we’re just gonna call him, uh, Shmogan Shmaul. We know who I’m talking about. I don’t know why I’m not using his name because you know who I’m talking about. Essentially Shmogan Shmaul was travelling and vlogging in Japan and he visited a forest that is commonly known as a place where people commit suicide.

While he was there Shmogan and his friends happened upon a recently dead body and instead of calling the authorities, or taking it seriously uh, they decided to film it and post it to his millions of young subscribers. Made a lot of jokes about it while it was happening. It was really f*cked up. I know when people are uncomfortable or don’t know how to handle something they’ll sometimes make jokes as a coping mechanism but… uhhhhh… There’s definitely a conversation to be had about YouTube stars kind of recklessly influencing younger audiences but I’m sure there’s already been a million videos made on that subject, so we’re just– we’re not gonna talk about that. There’s been a lot of really great mental health discussions surrounding this in a general sense but I haven’t seen a lot of people talking about mental health stigma specifically in Asian communities.

I’m Japanese American, so I’m gonna be speaking from an American perspective but I’m gonna link to a couple of Japanese Youtubers who also made videos about this from a Japanese perspective. Little bit of backstory, mental illness definitely rampant in my family and thankfully they’ve been pretty supportive about it. I’ve never really felt stigmatized or shamed by my family for seeking out treatment for depression and anxiety.

However after reading a lot of responses from other Asian American folks who reached out to me with their stories I realized that my experience isn’t necessarily the norm. Here’s a little bit of background on mental illness in Asian American communities and if you’re interested all of my sources are gonna be linked below. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Asian Americans aged 15 to 34. However relative to other US populations Asian Americans are three times less likely to seek out mental health services.

I’ve been doing some research on this and there are actually a lot of reasons why this is unfortunately the reality and I think it’s important that we talk about it. The most commonly cited reason for this is language barriers and lack of culturally competent mental healthcare. As you might know a large portion of the Asian American community are made up of immigrants. I can relate to this because my dad is a first generation Japanese Brazilian immigrant. Unfortunately there is not a lot of research or information about Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders with limited English in regards to mental illness. That’s definitely part of the reason why there are limited culturally competent resources for Asian Americans and not just Asian Americans but other ethnic communities as well. Another big reason for this is that mental illness is still considered taboo in a lot of Asian cultures. According to studies Asian Americans and Asian American women in particular don’t seek out mental health resources because most therapists and psychiatrists don’t understand the complex ways in which their mental illness, and their family, and their culture intersect.

According to a study called breaking the silence a study of depression among Asian American women “Feeling responsible, yet unable to meet biased and unrealistic standards set by families and society contributes to low self-esteem among Asian-American women.” “Asian-American women witness depression in their families but have learned from their Asian cultures to maintain silence on the subject.” “Asian-American women fear stigma for themselves, but more so for their families.” This makes sense to me because a lot of Asian cultures are collectivist. So if you consider mental illness a “weakness” then it doesn’t just reflect poorly on you it reflects poorly on your whole family.

Because of this Asian Americans statistically tend to dismiss, deny, or neglect their symptoms and don’t seek out treatment. However it’s not necessarily a refusal of treatment more so a lack of awareness of mental health resources that exist. Part of the reason for this is language barriers, which I mentioned earlier but also there’s not a lot of outreach from mental health providers to our community specifically. For a lot of Asian Americans they tend to stay within their own communities and they don’t know about resources outside of that. So this is the part of the video where I talk about BetterHelp as an important mental health resource. I’ve worked with BetterHelp in the past, and I think they do really great work and I appreciate their services a lot. What I like about BetterHelp is 1. It’s super affordable compared to your standard therapy options. For a lot of therapists it’s not uncommon for a single visit to cost between a hundred and two hundred dollars and BetterHelp can be as low as $35 a week which is more accessible to a lot of people. Second thing I really like about BetterHelp is that you can communicate with a counselor or a therapist via message, live chats, phone call, or video message.

If you’re like me then phone calls can sometimes give you anxiety so it’s nice to have a variety of options. It’s super simple to sign up all you have to do is answer a short questionnaire. There are questions like “What is your gender?” and they give the option for non-binary, which is really cool. They even ask about sexual orientation because if you’re LGBT then you know that finding a LGBTQ friendly therapist is not the easiest task. And that’s it and then you’ll be matched with the therapist in under twenty four hours. So if you’re someone who has struggled with mental illness, and you haven’t been able to access therapy then definitely check out the link below and sign up. Here’s a list of the incredible people who support me on Patreon and make my work possible. If you would also like to help support me and have your name mentioned in a future video my Patreon will be linked below and it’s got a lot of cool perks so definitely check it out.
